On the Farm Storytime

on May 2, 2013

Opening: Shake My Sillies Out – Raffi

Book: Cock-a-doodle Quack! Quack! – Ivor Baddiel

671009

(This was a hit! The kids really liked all the mistakes the little rooster made.)

Activity: 5 Pigs from Mel’s Desk (tune: 5 green and speckled frogs)

Five pigs so squeaky clean, cleanest you’ve ever seen,

wanted to go outside and play. Uh huh!

One jumped into the mud, landed there with a thud.

Now there are four pigs squeaky clean. Oink, oink!

(The pigs are two sided, one clean and one dirty. It was a happy surprise for the kids when they got ‘dirty’ in the mud. Afterwards I ‘cleaned’ them all off with my hand.)

Book: Blue Chicken – Deborah Freedman

 blue-chicken

(Fun illustrations, and the kids quite enjoy it.)

Activity: Go and Get the Cows – traditional, hear a version here!

Place cows on flannel board. Fall ‘asleep’ and remove them all.

Wake up you sleepyheads
Go and get the cattle,
Wake up you sleepyheads
Go and get the cows.

All the cows have run away, Oh no!

The cows are lost.
The sun is warm.
So I’ll just rest,
Til they come home.

Replace cows incrementally, ours were all different colors so we identified them as they ‘came back home’

( This was a bit more popular the last time I did it, but still worked well enough.)

Book: The Cow Loves Cookies – Karma Wilson

The Cow Loves Cookies

(I feel like the repetition gets just a bit old, the kids attention wandered just a bit. The payoff is worth it though. )

Activity: Old McDonald – traditional

Old Macdonald had a farm, ee-i-ee-i-o
And on his farm he had a cow, ee-i-ee-i-o
With a moo-moo here, and a moo-moo there
Here a moo, there a moo, everywhere a moo-moo
Old Macdonald had a farm, ee-i-ee-i-o

(continue with other animals)

(I used our farm stuffed animals with this song, and ended with a Dinosaur, which was a fun surprise.)

Book: Thirsty Thursday – Phyllis Root

6694813

(I wish this were just a bit longer, a fun story with nice pictures about a girl who tickles clouds to get rain.)

Activity: Streamers
