Dinosaur Storytime

Opening: Shake My Sillies Out – Raffi

Book: Dinosaur Vs. Bedtime – Bob Shea

(Bob Shea is fantastic, the kids like roaring along. Great interactive potential.)

Activity: No More Room

4 huge dinosaurs Sleeping on the cave floor

Woke up and started to roar

“There’s no more room, there’s no more room

there’s no more room on this floor!”

Well, they tossed and they turned and they pushed galore

Till one poor dinosaur was pushed out the door!

-repeat with 3,2,-

 (last verse)

One huge dinosaur Sleeping on the cave floor

Woke up and started to roar

“Come back, come back, it was better before

It’s more fun together, crowded on the floor!”

 

(We’d count the dinosaurs each time, and do some basic actions. Was well received.)

Book: Stomp Dinosaur Stomp – Margaret Mayo

(A nice introduction to different dinosaurs. I had the kids say the names with me as they were introduce, did skip a few pages.)

Activity: We Are The Dinosaurs – from the CD Whaddaya Think of That by Laurie Berkner

(A jolly good rollick where we get to act like dinosaurs. What’s not to like!) 

Book: Edwina the Dinosaur Who Didn’t Know She Was Extinct – Mo Willems

(This is one I think the parent’s appreciate a big more, but it held everyone’s interest.)

Puppet Song: Dinosaur Round – from the CD Rhinoceros Tap by Sandra Boynton

(This was quite simple, the dinosaur wants to eat more and more, and I was surprised how much everyone loved it! Some of the food stuff fell on the floor, and there were eager children ready to feed the dino. At the end of the song I have all the food gone and the dino gulps down the boy! 0.0)

Book: How Do Dinosaurs Eat their food – Jane Yolen

(After the last activity, we learned how dinosaurs are Supposed to behave with their food. A fantastic series.)

Activity: Streamers

(Got out streamers for the kids to play with, not theme related this week. They had a blast, and once the streamers were passed out the dino puppet came out to nibble on brave children’s fingers.)

Colors Storytime

I’ve done colors before as a theme, but I decided this time to focus on a specific color for each book, rather than smooshing them all in each time. The activities still had a variety!

Opening: Shake My Sillies Out – Raffi

We practiced some of the colors as I put the pillows from the Tooth Fairy flannel on the board. Then left them up during the first story. 

Book: The Red Wolf – Margaret Shannon

(This was a bit too long. I’ll try to make it more concise for the Thur group. I love the story and the illustrations! And I was surprised at how well the kids stayed focused. …this worked great for the Thur group with some pages clipped together and the rest condensed a bit!)

Visual: Tooth Fairy

(Now we made use of the pillows! One had a tooth hidden behind it, so the tooth fairy came out and sang her song until we found the tooth. Jolly good fun.)

Look and see, look and see,

Can you find the tooth for me?

Is it behind the ____ pillow?

 

(I like to get suggestions from the kids on which pillow to look under, and it makes them more excited too! If they get it too quickly, the tooth fairy goes to a different house with the tooth under a different pillow and we play again!)

Book: Little yellow leaf – Carin Berger

(I felt that this might not be interesting enough for the kids, and there is probably a better choice out there. Notwithstanding that, it worked well enough especially adding some talking points throughout.  I think it’s charming, and it tied it very nicely to the next activity!)

Song/Activity: Autumn Leaves

Way up high in an autumn tree

a little Green leaf happy as could be

The wind went Wwhoooooshh!!

and the leaf danced around,

then floated gently to the ground.

(The kids had a great time with this, though passing out the pre-sorted leaves took a bit of time. We held them up high, danced them around, then drifted down to the ground with them.)

Book: Blue Chicken– Deborah Freedman

(Chicken spills the paint, and the other animals aren’t too happy about it! Lovely illustrations and narrative.)

Puppet: Baa baa black sheep – Traditional

(We sang Baa Baa Black Sheep, then this little guy popped up because no one ever sang about the white sheep! So we did, and then he put on different colors so that more were represented. The kids were much more excited about this in the Thur group. The idea of the sheep puppet with other colors was taken from Amy White of the Orem Public Library)

Book: Where is the green sheep? – Mem Fox

(The kids really liked this one, it was nice to bring back some simplicity.) =]

Activity: Leaves on Parachute

(All of the leaves from the song were put on a parachute, and we bounced it! The kids were so excited today, and even after quite a bit of play time, they left the room buzzing.)

Night Creatures Storytime

 Opening: Shake My Sillies Out – Raffi

(I ended up having such a good time with this! And quite a bit of it was thrown together relatively last minute.)

Book: Kittens First Full Moon – Kevin Henkes

 

(A simple story with lovely large pictures. The group wasn’t quite settled down yet, but there were still some devoted listeners.)

Activity: There’s something in the nighttime (Modified from There’s something in my garden)

 There’s something in the nighttime

that I can’t really see.

There’s something in the nighttime,

now what can it be?

Whoo, Whoo

Hear it’s funny sound?

Whoo, Whoo

An Owl is what I found!

(Continue with other animals, I used an Owl, a cat, a mouse, and a skunk

‘Smell that funny smell? Sniff, sniff, A skunk! You sure can tell!’)

(I use the ‘Something in my Garden’ during book babies, and it was an easy modification for this! I wanted to use a bat, but didn’t have one on hand, so I used what I had. I think the kids weren’t as excited about the skunk as I was.) =P

Book: Owl Babies – Martin Waddell

(Such cute illustrations, and an adorable story. Tried with some success to get the kids saying ‘I want my mommy!’ along with the littlest owl. Quite well received.)

Activity: Owl Freeze Game (modified from the song ‘Silly Dance Contest’ by Jim Gill)

 Fly any way you want to, fly any way you please

fly any way you want to, but stop when I say Sleep!

(continue with fly as high as you want to, fly as fast as you want to,

then fly any way you want to again to end.)

(I made a two-sided moon/sun visual and explained to the kids that we were going to be owls. That means that if the sun is out we have to be asleep! Then I’d flip it around to the moon for us to be owls flapping our wings. I used a freeze game format, shouting out Sleep! after they’d been flying for a bit and everyone lay down. Loads of fun!)

Book: Dark Night – Dorothee de Monfreid

(Everyone was really into the storytime at this point, and helped out making the animals noises. A fun simple story, the best kind.)

Activity: Bears Toothache (Modified from the book The Bears Toothache by David McPhail)

I was sleeping in my bed last night, when I heard a noise out my window.

‘Grrrrrrrrrrooooowwwl’

Do you know what it was? A Bear! This was a nice bear, but it had a toothache, that’s why it was grumpy. 

I decided to help out, so I found the hurt tooth and I pulled, and pulled. But it was too stuck! 

Then the bear thought chewing on some gum might help to make it loose. 

  

But he just swallowed the gum. No more gum for you bear!

I tried to hit the tooth with my pillow, but the bear ducked!

I guess he didn’t want to get hit in the face. I thought I’d try one more thing.

So I got some string and tied it to the tooth. Then I held tight, and the bear jumped out the window.

Look! The tooth! The bear said ‘Thank you’ and let me keep the tooth because I was such a big help.

What do you do with a tooth? Put it under your pillow! Good night.

(The audience was really engaged with this, probably because of my huge bear! One little girl came up to stand right beneath it, so I had her hold the string when the bear jumped out the window. Very cute and fun for everyone!)

Book: A Book of Sleep – Il Sung Na

(I love the illustrations in this book. The story is very simple, but the kids had fun identifying the animals.)

Activity: Bats in the belfry

One bat hanging in the belfry,

One bat flew in threw the door.

Two bats hanging in the belfry

snuggled up and flying no more.

(continue with increasing numbers, we went to six)

(I threw this together the night before while at the children’s desk. I had four kids ask to make a bat while I was working on it, so I decided that could be a craft for after the storytime! I traced a pattern and copied it onto colored paper. The kids choose the color bat they wanted, colored it, and then I taped on a pipe cleaner loop that bent over for feet so the bats could hang upside down from the kids fingers. Everyone had a great time with it!)

Activity: Time to be Happy

Is it time to be serious?

No, no no! (shake head side to side)

Is it time to be happy?

Yes, let’s go! (Smile big and laugh!)

(We repeated this a couple of times, talking more quietly and laughing more loudly.)

(I was trying desperately to find something to fit here, and the night before storytime I went to bed all a flustered that my attempts at ‘the old lady who swallowed a fly’ were failing [I really wanted to do something with The Bears Toothache by  Mcphail, but couldn’t get a copy of it]. So I woke up and this came to me. It was simple and fun and a perfect transition to the next story!)

Book: Augustus and his Smile – Catherine Rayner

(Augustus never really shows his teeth, but we talked about smiling right before, so it worked all right…and I love the pictures!)

Flannel Board: Tooth Fairy 

Look and see, look and see, can you find the tooth for me?

Is it under the Red pillow?

(repeat with different colors, ending on the pillow with the tooth under it!)

(I asked the kids if they knew what happened when their tooth falls out, someone in each group was able to introduce the tooth fairy that way. I really had no idea what I was doing during the creation of the tooth fairy puppet, but it worked out! I think the parents were more tickled by her voice than the kids were.)

Book: I’m a Shark – Bob Shea

(I was determined to not make this a dentist storytime, so even one reference to a sharks teeth in this book was enough for me! Bob Shea is always great)

Activity: Brush Your Teeth – from the CD Singable Songs for the Very Young by Raffi

(I guided the kids through different brushing [using our fingers] during the song, up and down, back and forth, in circles, all the way in the back! And we showed our pretty smiles at the end.)

Book: Pony Brushes His Teeth – Michael Dahl

(A good introduction to tooth care while keeping it fun. Dad’s expression at the end is great!)

Activity: Five Little Monkeys Swinging in the Tree – traditional

Five little monkeys swinging in a tree
teasing Mr. Alligator can’t catch me….you can’t catch me
along came Mr. Alligator quiet as can be
and snapped that monkey out that tree

(repeat with decreasing numbers. )
