(One of our groups wasn’t really into this, but the other had a great time with it!)

(This was a bit of a stretch for the theme, but during the Rumpus, we chatted about how they were all being friends, and why the Wild Things didn’t want Max to leave.)

Humbug Witch

adapted from the story by Lorna Balian


There was this little witch… All of her was little except her nose. That was very Big.She had long, stringy, red hair. It was so long she kept tripping over it. She wore a slightly squashed, tall, black, pointed hat like Witches always wear, orange gloves, a handknit black wool shawl, an old plaid apron, and funny-looking black shoes with gold buckles on them.

She had a good sturdy broom, and a black cat named Fred.

You can see for yourself…she was truly a frightening-looking, Horrible, Witchy, Witch!

But… when she tried to Do things they never worked the way they were supposed to for witches.

Like when she wanted to laugh wickedly and scare everyone it never soudned “Cackle-Cackle-Cackle.” It always sounded “Giggle-Giggle-Giggle.”

Or when she wanted to go somewhere she would climb on her good sturdy broom and say all sorts of magic words, and wait a few minutes… and Nothing would happen. Nothing at all. The broom would not move an inch.

And when she wanted to turn Fred into an alligator, or a hippopotamus, or a candy bar, and would say all kinds of magic words, and wait… and wait… but Fred just stayed a cat!

When she wanted to cook up a batch of magic potion, she would dump all the very best things in her very best kettle …things like Sour Milk, Molasses, Egg Shells, Apple Peelings, Genuine Rainwater, and Peanut Butter. And she would stir and stir and say all the magic words she could think of.

It never got smoky, or bubbly, or exploded like magic potions are supposed to do.

She finally decided it was just no use! She took off her funny-looking black shoes with the gold buckles.

She took off her plaid apron.

She took off her handknit black wool shawl.

She took off her slightly squashed Tall Black Pointed hat.

She took off her orange gloves.

She took off her long, stringy, red hair.

She took off her mask. And went to bed.

And so did Fred.

(This was a hit, and super simple. The kids loved identifying the jobs based on their uniforms, and then deciding which would use the tools we revealed.) 


Book: Up, Up, Down – Robert Munsch

(Perfectly simple fun book, the kids loved it. The ending felt just a bit abrupt.) 


Activity: Grand Old Duke of York

Oh, The grand old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men;
He marched them up to the top of the hill,
And he marched them down again.

And when they were up, they were up,
And when they were down, they were down,
And when they were only half-way up,
They were neither up nor down.

(We marched in place, then went on our toes for Up, and squatted for Down). 

(We started this at a normal speed, then gradually increased the speed for about four rounds of the song. They loved it!) 


Book: What Color is Your Underwear? – Sam Lloyd

(A simple, silly book. The kids were great at identifying the colors, and really liked the laugh-out-loud ending.) 


Activity: One Rain Drop

(A simple little rhyme, wasn’t fantastically recieved, but I needed something else for the theme, and they didn’t dislike it.) 

One rain drop came out to play,
On an umbrella one day.
It had such enormous fun
That it called for another little drop to come!

(A fun simple rhyme. Not such a hit this week though.) 

Five pigs so squeaky clean, cleanest you’ve ever seen,
wanted to go outside and play. Uh huh!
One jumped into the mud, landed there with a thud.
Now there are four pigs squeaky clean. Oink, oink!

(This is a very fun book, if just slightly long. It still holds the kids attentions well, and the adults really appreciate it.) 


Activity: Princess and the Mattresses
(Princess and the Pea)

(A very fun puppet story, inspired by a post at The Voices Inside My Headphones. The kids love the sleepless princess and the surprises she discovers in her bed.) 

On top of all these mattresses I get to spend the night,
I toss and turn and cannot sleep, for something is not right.
Something (tickley, squishy, buzzy, scary, lumpy)  keeps me up.
These mattresses I’ll spread…
A (feather, banana peel, bee, monster, pea)! That’s no good,
get out of my bed!

(The princess then throws the item and climbs up for the next verse)

Finally everything is soft, and I can rest my head. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

(This is a very fun story I adapted for our letter. T-Rex watches a movie with clowns and laughs, watches movie with monsters and hides, watches a movie with crying and cries, then watches a movie with kissing and falls asleep. Everyone loved it!) 


Book: Treasure Bath – Dan Andreasen

(A very nice book, great pictures and a pretty clear story even with no text. It’s always been a hit!) 


Activity: I Had a Little Turtle

I had a little Turtle
(Sign language for Turtle)
His name was Tiny Tim I put him in the bathtub
(set ‘turtle’ onto the floor)
To see if he could swim
(pantomime swimming)
He drank up all the water
(pretend to drink)
He ate up all the soap
(pretend to eat)
and now he’s sick in bed with a bubble in his throat!
(point to throat)
Bubble, bubble, bubble, Bubble, bubble, bubble,
(hands make bubble shape, and move farther apart)
Bubble, bubble, bubble, Bubble, bubble POP!
(hands end up far apart, then come together for a loud Clap!)

(This is a fun little activity. The kids that don’t already know it catch on really quickly.)

(I think the kids like the follow up story better, but this emphasised the Teddy, so we used it, and it was okay.) 


Activity: The Bears Toothache

(A very engaging activity. I need to make a post just for this story soon!) 


Book: Tickle the Duck – Ethan Long

(A super fun book! One day we had a crowd a little too eager to join in the tickling. The other day they were very well behaved, and on the last page we took the book around to give them the chance to tickle …since the duck had said it was okay.)  =]


Activity: Toy Instruments

Back to School Storytime

(A bit abstract, but really fun illustrations, and goofs on Fox’s part.) 


Activity: Little Cuckoo clock

(Sometimes the simplest stuff is the best stuff. The clock is drawn on a piece of foam, with the hour hand stuck in the center. We just moved it to the next number before the next verse of the song, then stopped and 4:00 and just counted the rest of the numbers. )

Tick tock, tick tock, I’m a little cuckoo clock.
(swing arms in rythem)
Tick tock, tick tock, now it’s one o’clock.
Cuckoo! (jump once)

(Continue with two, three, four and five o’clock.)


Book: Oliver and his Alligator – Paul Schmid

(I was a little hesitant about including this, but it was quite a hit! The kids and parents both enjoyed it, and it had some nice talking point opportunities.)

(The kids really like this activity, the only trouble is when we don’t have enough time to include every color.)

(This was a very nice addition. A few of the spreads were a little busy for storytime, but not enough to exclude it.)

(A really fun activity. There is a recording available out there, but I like the freedom of including a dinosaur!)

he’ll have to learn the alphabet too.
