SLC Book Boy

the storytime ventures of a children's librarian

Sometimes I feel…

(We’ve just started doing two person storytime programs, which certainly helps with an average of 40 children at each program, and it’s been loads of fun exploring this new dynamic!)

Opening: Shake My Sillies Out – Raffi

Book: My Friend is Sad – Mo Willems

myfriendissad

(Can’t go wrong with Mo Willems, and having us each with a book reading the different parts ads to the fun!)

Puppet: Sam’s Cookie – from the book by Barbro Lindgren

2013-08-20_11-53-52_783

(Sam get’s a cookie, but then doggie comes and wants the cookie. Presents a wonderful range of emotions!)

sams cookie

(We presented this just as scripted first, then did it again with the kids identifying each emotion Sam was feeling. Fun!)

Book: Never Too Little To Love – Jeanne Willis

nevertoolittletolove

(A sweet book with a fun format, the stacking items and pop-up kiss are good engagers.)

Song/Activity: If you’re happy and you know it

(The traditional song with whatever emotions the kids suggested thrown in! Nervous almost threw me off, be we held out breath for that.)

Book: The Day Leo Said I Hate You! – Robie H Harris

dayLeoSaidIHateYou

(So vibrant and raw with it’s portrayal, I love it! I read for Leo, and Amber read the Mothers parts.)

Flannel Board: Little Miss Muffet – Traditional

2013-08-20_11-54-45_116

(The kids love hearing Miss Muffet scream! We did this a few times.)

Book: It’s a Tiger – David LaRochelle

its-a-tiger

(The kids were brave with the spider, so then we went on an adventure with a tiger! Another great vibrant book.)

Activity: Streamers

(Then we played with streamers, like the ‘jungle vines’ of the last story.

Dinosaur Storytime

Opening: Shake My Sillies Out – Raffi

Book: Dinosaur vs The Library – Bob Shea

dinosaur vs the library

(A good intro for proper library behavior, and we got to start the storytime with roaring!)

Activity: Dini Dinosaur – based on the book by Karen Beaumont

2013-07-03_14-09-31_971

Dini has been playing in the mud, so him mom tells him he needs a bath before bed. He scrubs different parts, but forgets to take of his clothes! Back in the tub!

2013-07-03_14-17-47_385

“Dirty Dini Dinosaur splashed in the tub. He tried to wash his head with a scrub-a-dub-dub!
Silly Dini Dinosaur! Don’t you know? You have to take your Hat off, back you go!”

Dini’s momma helps him get clean, and tucks him into bed. Good night Dini!

(Pretty cute, and simple. Kept the kids engaged.)

Book: Down at the Dino Wash Deluxe – Tim Myers

downatdinosaurwash

(I thought it might be a little too wordy, but it worked out fine. Nice bright pictures.)

Activity: We Are The Dinosaurs – from the CD Waddda Think of That by Laurie Berkner

(I introduce some different dino’s we can be …flap for pterodactyl, hold up fingers on head for triceratops, chop hand together for t-rex, etc…and we act out the song. It’s fantastic!)

Book: The Really Really Really big Dinosaur – Richard Byrne

reallybigdinosaur

(A cute story with a bit of a surprise ending, and a good lesson in manners.)

Puppet Song: Dinosaur Round – from the CD Rhinoceros Tap by Sandra Boynton

2012-11-27_09-18-21_291

(The puppets act out this song. Dino is a bit of a messy eater, but the kids are eager to re-feed him the food that drops. At the very end he gobbles up the boy! Loads of fun.)

Book: How Do Dinosaurs Eat their food – Jane Yolen

 Dinos-Eat-Their-Food

(Then we learn how you ought to behave at meal time. This series is awesome.)

Activity: bubbles

(You think these are bubbles? No, they’re mini asteroids! Destroy them before they crash into the earth!)
